What this service collects and why: Ground News collects your name, address, phone number, email, date of birth (optional), and payment details when you create an account or subscribe. If you use the mobile app, it also collects your precise geolocation automatically — this is tied to Apple App Store and Google Play requirements. The browser extension collects metadata about news articles you view (title, URL, author, publisher) and any notes you write, but Ground News says it does not use that extension data for advertising or share it with third parties.
How your data is shared: Ground News says it does not sell your personal information to advertisers. However, it does share web traffic and cookie data with Google via Google Analytics, and it uses YouTube API services which bind you to YouTube's own terms. Your data can also be shared with service providers (payment processors, IT support, email providers), and would be handed over in a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy, or if required by law. Marketing and analytics cookies may count as "sharing" under California law.
Your controls: You can correct or view your account data directly in your account settings. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails, turn off push notifications, and restrict location access on your device. California residents have formal rights to access, delete, correct, and opt out of data sharing. EU/UK users have GDPR rights including access, erasure, portability, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. You can opt out of Google Analytics via a browser add-on.
Data retention and security: Ground News keeps your data only as long as needed for the stated purpose. Accounts inactive for 90 days may be closed, and account data is deleted after account termination. The policy acknowledges that no security system is perfect and cannot guarantee absolute protection of your information.
