What This Policy Covers

This is Amazon's Terms of Use for Alexa, covering everything from basic voice requests to subscriptions, smart home control, and communication features like Drop In and Alexa Calling. It applies to all Alexa-enabled devices (Echo speakers, the Alexa app, etc.) and governs both you and anyone else who uses Alexa on your account.

What Amazon Collects and How It's Used

Every interaction you have with Alexa — voice recordings, text inputs, shopping lists, music choices, smart home device status, even camera and motion data on Echo Show devices — is sent to Amazon's cloud and stored. Amazon uses this data to personalize your experience and to train its AI models. If you create a Voice ID, Amazon builds an acoustic profile of your voice. If you create a Visual ID, Amazon creates a numeric representation of your facial features, which Amazon acknowledges may be considered biometric data. Both are updated over time. Amazon's Sidewalk feature (on by default) shares a slice of your internet bandwidth and the approximate location of your devices with a broader mesh network.

Third Parties and Purchases

When you use third-party Alexa skills, information about your request (including ZIP code, device data, and text transcripts) is shared with those third parties. Amazon takes no responsibility for what those third parties do with your data. Voice purchasing is enabled by default — anyone who can speak to your device can potentially make purchases. You can set a spoken PIN or disable it. If you authorize purchases through a third-party skill using your Amazon payment details, your full payment information (card number, expiration, billing address) and account details can be shared with that third party's payment processor.

Your Rights and Risks

Amazon can change, suspend, or terminate Alexa at any time without notice, and can terminate your account without a refund. Its maximum liability to you is capped at $50. Free trials auto-convert to paid subscriptions — you must cancel before the trial ends to avoid being charged. Alexa Communication cannot call 911 or other emergency services, which is a critical safety limitation to be aware of.
